Dreamweaver FTP Setup
In this tutorial I’m going to show you how to set up an FTP connection in Dreamweaver.
In Dreamweaver CS3 which I think is Dreamweaver 9 and CS4 which is version 10 you can set up a permanent FTP connection to your server, meaning once you have set it up, it is always connected to your webhost and makes the process of uploading and downloading files to and from your server very easy and fast.
So here we are in Dreamweaver CS3 or version 9. If you are working with the latest version CS5 or version 11, the steps I presume would be the same.
Here we are at the page we created earlier called index.html
First, we come over to the right hand side of the page where it says “manage sites” and click on the drop down menu and then click on the bottom link that says “manage sites”.
This screen will then appear. If you’re setting up an FTP for the first time, click on new. If you already have some sites connected then I find it quickest just to duplicate them and change the relevant info. Either way we’ll make the connection so I’ll just go ahead and duplicate an existing site.
What we have with any FTP, is to connect a folder or website on your computer with web space on a remote server that will display material you upload to that server to the world.
So firstly I’ll put the info about the local folder on my computer in the FTP local host text boxes.
Firstly put in the site name, this can be anything that defines the site.
Next we put in the local root folder info. This is where the main folder containing files and future material are kept on your computer or external hard drive.
Next we enter the full URL of your website.
Once that info is input and you’ve checked it for errors, click on the “remote info” tab under “category”.
Then filling in the info in the text boxes.
Access is FTP. As this is an add on domain my FTP host is makeavideotips.babyfirstjapan.com. If this was the only or first website being hosted then the FTP host would be makeavideotips.com.
Host directory is public_html/makeavideotips.com/
Login, which is the primary log in address for my host gator account, and password.
When you duplicate an existing site you’ll need to also change the info in the site map layout page.
Everything else at this point in time is irrelevant.
So once this is done and there are no typos, you can test the connection by hitting the “test” button beside the log in text box.
So our connection here is successful.
Then we click on ok and ok again then done and we now have a permanent FTP connection every time we’re working in Dreamweaver.
All files for this domain are now displayed in the right hand column in Dreamweaver.
Let’s now upload a page to the server. Let’s add “test two” to our index .html page, then save the page.
For convenience there are a couple of different places to save a page. One is click on “file”, then “save”, or for quicker service just click on the “save” icon at the top of the page.
For convenience there are also a couple of places to upload pages as well. By clicking on the green and blue arrows we can either get files from the server or put files on the server from our computer.
Also over here on the right side of the screen using these green and blue arrows we can transfer files to and from the server.
So I’ll put our newly saved page on the server by clicking “put”.
If this is the first time you’re uploading files it’s advisable to click “yes” when asked whether you want to upload dependent files.
Once the upload is complete we can check by opening a new browser and view the website.
And there it is with our changes intact. Let’s make another change, save it and upload it using the other upload arrow. We don’t need to put dependent files up for we just did that so I’ll click on “no”.
Back with Google and refresh, and here is the new page with the newest changes.
Finally we’ll do one more change and upload it using the ever reliable FTP95 program, just to make sure everything’s connected and working as should be.
Navigate to where the index.html page is located on my computer, hit send
Refresh my browser, and … the changed page has been uploaded successfully.
Should take about 10 to 15 minutes to set up. |
